Dental sealants are an excellent preventive dentistry solution for many of our patients, including:
- Kids who are still developing their brushing and flossing skills
- Adults who are at increased risk for tooth decay
- Those who have deep pits and grooves in their teeth that trap bacteria
- Those who have dental wear caused by teeth grinding and clenching
The American Dental Association recommends sealants as a key to cavity prevention. This quick, easy preventive solution protects especially the molars and premolars that are more difficult to reach.
The dental sealant placement process is simple. Leading Edge Dentistry determines what areas of the teeth are most in need of protection. We then clean the teeth and apply an etching solution before rinsing the tooth, drying it, and coating it with sealant. We then harden the dental sealants in place using a curing light like those used during composite resin filling placement. We are able to complete the entire process quickly as part of any regular six month dental checkup.
Once in place, dental sealants create a protective barrier between teeth and food particles, bacteria, plaque, and tartar. Sealants are able to repel decay causing bacteria for up to ten years with proper care. Patients who struggle with bruxism (unconscious teeth grinding and clenching) will need to wear a nightguard to protect their teeth from damage and preserve their dental sealants.
